Agioi Apostoloi Camping Complex

3_edited.jpg

Restoration and repurpose proposition for the history-rich Children's Camping complex in Agioi Apostoloi, Chania. The original complex was built in 1938 by teacher Masouris Manos and was later used as a military hospital and a Nazi concentration camp before operating again briefly as a children's camp for the post-war afflicted families.

This proposition suggests reusing the main building as a museum/cultural center highlighting the camping's long history. The wing reserved to the museum has been left untouched in order to preserve part of its iconic visual.  The other wing is designed to host workshops and activities for children and has a cafeteria on the top floor. The surrounding buildings consist of a restaurant, a children's library and a small space to be used as a living space by the people working in the facility.

As an alternative proposal, in addition to the main buildings, the surrounding area has been examined as a potential family-oriented retreat. Small units, reminiscent of the main building's old form, are spread across the hill, blending in with the natural surroundings. (2017)
